Papercrete Royal bust !

Hi everyone!

Even before 2017 ended I thought about changing my dolls construction as it felt that they were too serious and way too small for the fun I've always had envisioned whilst making so I did made some changes.
I've started to invest more on paper "skeletons" instead of toilet paper wrapped on wire and adding way more das clay. Mixed media indeed as soon as I started to be interested on adding a few shinny plastic beads here and there. Makes things shinier! Also a bit more cartoonish because people are easily touch by humor thus, I think, its a great way to teach history!
This overall became such a discovery that I felt the necessity to make a pause on doll making due to space limitations in the house.
My plan is to portray the life of Portuguese King D. João V on dolls.

Also recently I started to make papermache based pins to wear!

But this post isn't about dolls or pins, its about my newest papercrete bust!
Maybe since EVER I wanted to make a full size bust but always ended disappointed as I don't have school practice - all looked silly, misshaped, whatever!

Last year I, after visiting some churches in Lisbon thought on trying again - this time with papercrete! Turned out too big, I often felt lost and the face, although accurately human, didn't looked as the person I wanted to portray, so ... No, I didn't threw it to the garbage, but... don't know...

Whilst this one was even drying I thought upon doing another one - this time smaller!
I won't bother you with the whole story because sooner or later either I'll post something about it or make a video.
Cutting a long story short I will only say that there's nothing going wrong with this one (its smaller and I have a bit more experience and apparently either patience or skill).

My goal is to portray (again)  D. João V of Portugal at the age of 19, 20., exactly when he became King of Portugal.
I've been going on slowly, taking inspiration from colleagues like Girardon and Coysevox from portraits of Louis XIV of France, Leopold I of Habsburg empire or Felipe V of Spain and this is what I've achieved today
The white bits are also papercrete but have a thin coat of das clay because when it dries all the fibers of the paper comes up, so the das is to smooth the surfaces (specially on the face and cuirasse). As soon as the lumps dry I'll start to carve or model the curls of his wig (after adding the other side too, of course)
It looks great and I couldn't feel happier!!

If you still don't know what papercrete is and would like to know or try, there's a video I posted some time ago:

Papermache nativity scene cradle

Hi everyone :)

Nativity scenes were what triggered my doll making activity since I became acquainted with our XVIII century ones from the greatest artist of them all, the Portuguese sculptor Machado de Castro, most famous for his statue of King D. José I at Praça do Comércio in Lisbon (for sure you've been there, right?)

This year I've ventured to make a small one and want to hare how I did the manger so it might trigger you to do one too!

Have a look ;)

Hi everyone!

I'm passionate about papiermache and history. In this technique I make miniature dolls of historical people and loose miniatures either related to history or not. Also passionate about self portraiture and the male form which may result in some drawings, paintings or sculptures.

to Cynthia Crawford's loving memory and our "imaginary" friends

Hi everyone!

It was only yesterday that I became aware, through Instagram, of Cynthia Crawford's passing ...

If you don't know her, no I don't mean the model (google always wants to trick me too), I mean the ET sculptor that is mostly famous for stating being a hybrid (part human, part alien)

I came across her work some years ago. By the time I had "awakened" myself (whatever that means) and was doing small busts of some of the beings or entities that were jumping into my energy / awareness whilst meditating. By then I was trying to get some feedback from my social media but with no results. Finding her work online was a somewhat relief but also stressing because yet again all the beings she spoke of  didn't "matched" mine. Of course that by then my idea of reality was still based on believing that reality is built from an idea of outside towards the inside, eh eh eh

I wrote to her trough her website and amazingly she did answer (wow!). We exchanged some emails now and then because I always felt that she was my bridge to that king of awkward part of myself that filled me with... not really shame but something "strange" or way to strange but also with wonder and thus it became my trigger (even through only watching her on YouTube)

Nevertheless and yet again my idea of reality was "wrong" and as I never got the attention that I was craving in order not only to show my work but to "tell" each entity's message, I decided to destroy  that part of my work and carry on with the historical figures.

Last year I started slowly re- doing some as I felt a bit more connected with that "section" of self but was soon discouraged by the same reasons as before.

Nowadays although I tend to think that I'm more "inclined" towards opening up bridges between us in 2017 with other historical epochs, I know that it's my personal choice to use (or not) my talents to create or open other bridges towards... anything or anywhere!

Always seen Cynthia coming from a spaceship, looking always very tall and wearing a shimmering golden kind of cloak. Always felt her rather close but alas, within the idea of physical existence, I never had the chance neither to meet her personally or to get one of her sculptures :(
Thank you Cynthia and sorry for the sometimes cry baby tone emails!
